How to Create / Delete an FTP Account in cPanel

Any account holder can utilize their cPanel (Control Panel) username and password to access FTP. However, it is possible to create and delete additional FTP accounts via your cPanel whenever necessary. This tutorial will guide you through the process of creating and deleting an FTP account.

Creating an FTP Account

To create an FTP account, please follow these steps:

  1. Login to cPanel.
  2. Navigate to the “FTP Accounts” button located in the “Files” section.
  3. In the “Add FTP Account” section, fill in the necessary fields. Below is a brief description of each option:
  • Login: Enter the desired username. This will be combined with your primary domain name to create the full username (e.g. joeuser@example.com).
  • Password: Create a strong password for the account. You can use the “Password Generator” button for assistance or refer to our guide on Password Strength and Security.
  • Password (Again): Re-enter the password to confirm spelling.
  • Strength: This field indicates the security level of your password, ranging from Very Weak to Very Strong.
  • Directory: Specify the directory access for the FTP account. Enter a forward slash (/) for full access or restrict access by specifying a directory such as public_html/username.
  • Quota: Optionally, you can set a storage space limit for the FTP account.
  1. Click the “Create FTP Account” button to finish. You should see a confirmation message stating “Account Created.”

Deleting an FTP Account

  1. Login to cPanel.
  2. Navigate to the “FTP Accounts” button located in the “Files” section.
  3. Find the FTP account you wish to remove and click on the “Delete” button located to the right of it.
  4. A drop-down menu will appear with two options: “Delete Account” or “Delete Account and Files.” If you are unsure which option to choose, select “Delete Account.” If needed, you can always return later to delete any unnecessary files.
  5. After making your selection, the account will no longer be listed in the FTP Accounts section.
